Beauty Avatar or Minnu?

I went to Vanity Universe again to check out if there are any new skins at Skin Fair, there was! Well, I found one freebie skin from Beauty Avatar, whom I’ve never heard of before.

(this is located in a kiosk directly across from Gala skins)

It’s actually pretty decent, reminds me a lot of Minnu’s MMSNF skinline.

I think your money is better spent on Minnu, because the makeups on Beauty Avatar skins are completely weird!! Yes, I know some people like lace and all that… but this looks like a child had access to Photoshop and cut and pasted a bunch of lace, pixelated gemstones, and fuzzy black dots onto the face. Artistic, or child art? You decide.

So they give away a free skin and you reward them by denouncing their work as childlike.

    Lovely stuff.

  2. 2 Anonymous March 28, 2008 at 10:36 am

I buy on beauty avatar :))))) they have more fantasies ….. bye ARad….

  3. 3 Stella Semaphore March 28, 2008 at 11:41 am

I actually like the kookiness :)

  4. 4 Aradia Dielli March 28, 2008 at 12:56 pm

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who sees how much those skins look like Minnu’s. Of course when confronted, they said they got their skins from one of those 3d sites, yet they never provided us with the source. Not only are the skins *inspired* lol by MMS, but I guess they were on a roll and got inspired by Tuli’s makeup as well.

  5. 5 Annyka Bekkers March 28, 2008 at 2:53 pm

SO what exactly is the point of this post? Why would you single out one random and new skin designer out of all of skinfair and then make fun of her makeups?

Are you saying she’s ripping off Minnu? Because the only time people post split-screen comparison shots is when they’re accusing someone of theft. So why don’t you just come out and say it then instead of just hinting at it?

And if that IS what you’re getting at, then you really can’t use the face as comparison. Your avatar shape has such a strong influence on how a face looks that unless its a pixel-perfect copy, you cannot make an accurate judgement based on the face alone. Try comparing the knees and feet and the elbows and hands, and belly and ears and basically all of the rest of the body. That’s where the real evidence is.

If you’re NOT actually implying texture theft, then this review is incredibly mean to a brand new skin designer. And also…taking the freebie and then making fun of the demos is pretty tacky, IMHO.

  6. 6 gogolita March 28, 2008 at 3:08 pm

I wouldn’t single out a new designer just to make fun of them, my old blog got deleted, but I’m pretty sure there were lots of skins at Skin Fair that made me go… WTF?

Today, Beauty Avatar just happens to be one of them.

  7. 7 Anonymous March 28, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Huh. I thought that *was* a Minnu Skin until I read the text.

  8. 8 Annyka Bekkers March 28, 2008 at 3:18 pm

Then why not just come out and say it and show some solid evidence instead of just implying it with one very inflamatory but not very conclusive image?

Like I said before, there are many many telltales of a ripped skin, but theyre usually not on the face. Their usually on the tricky hidden parts that are no fun to do. Look around the seams. They always give it away.

I’m not saying you’re wrong. I just feel very strongly that if your going to imply that someone is a thief, you ought to have some pretty solid evidence.

  9. 9 melaniekiddofsl March 28, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Annyka, I don’t see ANY of the implications that you’re reading into this post.

All I see is a pretty straightforward and innocuous statement — “hey, these remind me of MMS”.

The implication came afterwards, in the form of a reader’s comment.

Seems to me that you’re the one who is taking the leap of logic here, going omg gogo is saying these are stolen!

  10. 10 Annyka Bekkers March 28, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Well, if she’s NOT saying they’re stolen, then she’s being really mean to an innocent skinmaker. So I don’t know.

  11. 11 Beauty Avatar March 28, 2008 at 5:02 pm

This post you are doing it’s not only free, but even superficial and ridicolous, and the fact that you only dimish our works, comparing the face of a skin that we’re giving for *FREE* with a skin that you can buy for hundreds of L$ (with obvious difference in the 2skins that you see similar), is one of the demonstration.

Our skins are created by person that have long years experience in the graphic industry, and everyone is smart enough to understand that no one child had access to Photoshop!

@ Aradia: we didn’t say that we’ve got our skins from “one of those 3D Sites” as you call them. We said that we’ve taken from there *some* of that the details that we used for Nefertiti Skin. We provided our source to another woman of Minnu’s Team, and we are sorry that we can’t post the IM where she, after seeing our original PNG File, excused with us for the misunderstanding, but as you reminded us, the TOS doesn’t allow this!

@ Melanie: We don’t think that open a post titled BEAUTY AVATAR OR MINNU, and comparing the 2skins in this way is just an innocuous statement!

Now we can come back to our job! See you soon for our new creations ;)

Annyka, I don’t see anything implied, hinted at, accusing, or inflammatory in Gogo’s post. Therefore she does not need to provide any proof or evidence; she didn’t make a single accusation in this post! You are the only one making inflammatory and accusing statements.

If you follow Gogo’s blog you would have seen the posts she did about the Skin Fair, and all the previous times she’s done skin posts. You’d also know that she doesn’t seem to sugar coat things, if she was accusing anyone you would know it.

  13. 13 Miabella Foxley March 28, 2008 at 5:25 pm

Just wanted to give you a little more details that could help your post here…
Ara, Minnu, and myself have spoken with the creator from this skin line. Not only was she more than willing to hand over her files to prove she did not steal Min’s skins, she emailed them to me within minutes and checked back the next day to make sure that it was received and resolved. YES they look alot like Min & Tuli’s work. But like Annyka said, check the rest of the body- faces can be tough.
I’m not supporting the creator for making skins so close to other designers, its the unique characteristics that make a GREAT skin maker. This is why some stand way above the rest. Personally, I think she should have tried to do her own thing. Regardless she was more than willing to cooperate with Minnu & that should say something. Ppl will shop based on quality.. I think that is the bottom line. No need to have a burn session though is it?

  14. 14 Freyja Nemeth March 28, 2008 at 6:03 pm

I read this post several times, and what I ultimately came away thinking was that the post suggested that this was another case of a stolen skin. The title of the post, the split-face comparison and the wording of the text all gave me this impression.

It may not have been intended to insinuate this, but I would be surprised if myself (and Annyka) were the only ones who read it as such, especially in the light of recent events.

  15. 15 melaniekiddofsl March 28, 2008 at 6:45 pm

True, Freyja makes a good point. Everyone’s quite sensitive to that sort of issue right now since so much theft has indeed been going on.

Sorry if my comment came across as rather abrupt :/ It’s just that Gogo’s a friend and I didn’t like seeing something attributed to her words that wasn’t there in the first place.

  16. 16 GG March 28, 2008 at 7:21 pm

oh but where’s the ceator of flexy skirt in SL??? maybe he want denunced someone ..lol

  17. 17 Enid Trenchcoat March 28, 2008 at 7:56 pm

I think it was a comparison. I do agree with Gogo that all the extra stuff is just not necessary. If you gotta dress your skin up that much to give it an edge, maybe you should just stick to making shoes or something. Good creative content stands alone and these Beauty Avatar skins just look like a tarted up old whore.

  18. 18 Anonymous March 28, 2008 at 10:31 pm

What lashes are those? They’re fab!

  19. 19 gogolita March 28, 2008 at 11:18 pm

anon, the lashes are Cake - Bedroom lashes :)

  20. 20 Anonymous March 29, 2008 at 12:08 am

I went to go check these skins out… and they’re L1950. They really look like low rent Minnu skins (the lips are all blurry though, were these fully rezzed?) and they cost signifcantly more. I’m having difficulty seeing why anyone would go for these when the Minnu skins are less expensive and better executed. She’s even got the lace applique look, if for some reason you’d want that.

  21. 21 varriale March 29, 2008 at 12:14 am

I thought this was just a comparison also - in the context of the post it seemed very clear to me that Gogo was comparing two similar skins and giving a review of which one she preferred…. like comparing two similar jeans from two different companies and saying that one of them would probably be the better buy in the long run.

  22. 22 Anonymous March 29, 2008 at 7:06 am

I actually like how this skin looked. But I have to agree with Annyka that we have to stop accusing people base on our hunches.

  23. 23 Mandy Ballyhoo March 29, 2008 at 8:02 am

Gogolita don’t miss a minute to answer to compliments! and what about the other post?
You are deliberately accusing a new skin designer, and you don’t give an answer about that. Who’s the child now?
And WHY a new skin line has to be compared to Minnu? Just because it’s a good skin? Ehy, has Minnu a monopoly of skins, and I didn’t know it?!? o.O

I’ve spent with happyness 1950L for Beauty’s skin, and now I feel sexy and different from all the others. ‘coz I’m tired to spend 1200L for a skin, and see millions of clones around me!

  24. 24 Lola March 29, 2008 at 8:58 am

I’ve seen both skins inworld and I cannot justify spending almost 2k on a skin of said new designer… there’s still much work to be done on it before daring to even think about such big figures and to me it looks like you are being attacked by fan boys (girls) of said Italian “mafia” store.

  25. 25 Rose March 29, 2008 at 12:17 pm

I could swear I’ve seen those on renderosity.com…

  26. 26 Stella Semaphore March 29, 2008 at 1:19 pm

lol “mafia” store lola :). I met Omnha Oh (the designer) and her sister Georgie yesterday and they are actually very nice girls and are hurt by all this controversy..How many completely unique faces is it possible to draw in SL?….anyhoooo everyone has gone over this whole skin inspiration crap a million times…soo

    I HEART GOGO
    AND
I HEART OMNHA AND GEORGIE TOO
    AND
    MINNU
    AND
    YOU TOO

My last remark was sarcastic cause to seemed to me that their friends come here to defend them.

I think that being nice or not has nothing to do with the fact that they still have much to learn before they attach their work a price tag that make them to be looked oddly upon.

The Beauty skins appear to be rather flat, blurry and not too flattering to ME, this my opinion.

Because many things in SL(r) are a copy of a copy of a copy, they should grow some thicker skin and just take the critic and use it in order to grow instead of sobbing or sending their friends to tell people how great they are.

  28. 28 Tenshi Vielle March 29, 2008 at 6:46 pm

Hrm, looks like the people of SL found a new punching bag.

  29. 29 Lola March 29, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Why of course Tenshi, no one should ever express any explicated form of personal opinion or critique else they would be chased by an angry mob of bleeding hearted children. :)

  30. 30 Stella Semaphore March 29, 2008 at 9:15 pm

Don’t like it, don’t buy it.
Grow some thicker skin? Ah, perhaps some should learn some decency.

  31. 31 Pier Tempel March 30, 2008 at 1:35 pm

I tought it was already solved time ago … *eyes aradia* no ? :o

  32. 32 annemarie March 30, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Everyone likes traffic. Lands and blogs alike. Saying good things about other people doesn’t generate traffic. Only controversy does. So che is chosing to target some designers and stir the pot. This way the outraged targets will tell their friends and everyone will come over to this page to have their say. Kinda shameless. But that is the way things go in the fashion industry. Googoolita, posts like this may give you few more clicks but for sure don’t boost your reputation.

  33. 33 o.o lmdgmb March 31, 2008 at 4:18 pm

If they both went to the same skin source, chances are there will be similarities, it takes just a slightly experienced eye to see the differences though.

I would say they did source from the same place but how each interpreted the eyes is noticably different along with the alignment of the eyebrows. The lip shape is not exact either. Minnu’s is much fuller and the shading at the bottom of the lip is missing on the other skin. Highlights/shadows along the face aren’t parallel as well.

Keep in mind, all these features could be using the same templates or texture maps that are freely distributed, so if they are all tracing along the same outlines on the templates, then yes you will see some similar points of reference like the nostrils or bridge of the nose and where the corners of the eyes are.

As far as the make up goes, I give them credit for the effort to provide something more stylized, but I personally am not feeling them. So I agree there that they need to work more on that. I especially didn’t like the first skin as the complexion looked too washed out and ashy. Paler skins are always a bit tricky.

For a first effort, not bad. And I appreciate that Gogo brings up things that most won’t dare question. If we all just ooh and ahh’d then we’d all be busy basking in our delusional glory and not evolving to something better.

  34. 34 Davo April 1, 2008 at 2:50 am

I like the Beauty skins..i see flair..difference and individuality.

The Best part of SL for me has been that anyone can come in and create content.. I love that people give it a go and sometimes create things fresh and cool.

A review is a review. If Gogo is limited to being a yes girl with sugar sweet posts that are nothing but advertisements who will keep reading ?? not me..well maybe me ..I do like the pictures.

Now i think I’m off to renderosity to grab some templates and make some lacey child art dotty skins..just for fun..and if anyone buys in SL woohoo !!..

    At the end of the day u like .. u buy… u get a freeby to review because u have a blog..u review it !!.. honest..open..and coolly..

    Doesnt Gogo rock ? !!

  35. 35 Creamy Cooljoke April 1, 2008 at 5:30 am

These skins look pretty nice to me. (I personally wouldn’t wear the lace effect ones though.) I don’t think this post will be detrimental to the designer, in fact I’m going to check these skins out right now :)

  36. 36 Ryker Beck April 7, 2008 at 10:33 pm

I think these skins are actually quite beautiful…. I especially like the beauty mark above the lip. And while I have to say that I’m not a fan of the lace effects, I do like the natural makeups, which is what I generally wear all the time anyway.

Brilliant job for a first timer, in my opinion. Brava.

    /mytwocents :P

  37. 37 RubyGarnet April 9, 2008 at 11:36 pm

I echo your thoughts, Ryker. These skins are very pretty, softer than the Minnu skins, and not that different in price to the MMgen4 skins. SL offers many choices; clones or stand alones. Just because gogo thinks they *might* be stolen before she checks her facts doesn’t mean that they are (as was proven through this thread).

    Viva la difference!

    Excellent job, Beauty!

in Light of Recent Accusations by an Award Winning Renderocity artist that Minnu aquired Skins for Poser 7 sold at Renderocity.com then Against the T.O.S. Re-Packaged them for sale on SL in her own Store I have come to the conclusion that the Skins listed in this article are no more then Rip offs of Other Designs created by someone else, outside of Secondlife. it was Greed on the part of the SL Merchants that Brought these Skins to the Game of SL.

  39. 39 Carmilla Mirabeau May 25, 2008 at 9:16 am

I checked these skins out before this blog post. Im sorry..unless its fricken gorgeous..Im not paying almost 2k for a skin…Specially when you can get decent low priced skins from Eloh Elliot :)

    Thanks for the blog! :)

  40. 40 TyGrr Babii May 29, 2008 at 9:41 pm

.. And Carmilla, I must say that your skins are always delicious.. so I agree with you.

*heads off to check out the Eloh Elliot character… and finish reading up on the Minnu/Danae controversy… *deep sigh :-(
